WE ARE SO EXCITED ABOUT OUR RECENT PRESENTATION ON HULLSCAPES AND BOAT HULL PHOTOGRAPHY AT THE WOODS HOLE OCEANOGRAPHIC INSTITUTE, WOODS HOLE, MA.

What a thrill, honor and opportunity to engage in conversation with such an esteemed and knowledgeable group.

Presentation: The Art of the Hull by Barry Beder, Photographer, Falmouth MA

Summary: Most boaters who see dirty and weathered stains along the water-line of their boats rush for the power washer. Instead, Barry Beder reaches for his camera seeing only beautiful seascapes, landscapes and abstract designs that look like paintings.

Barry’s photos have been described as remarkable, magical, sometime eerie. His extreme close-ups of boat hulls reveal dramatic images without the use of coloration, filters, or photoshop manipulation. Most people think my images are beautiful paintings, even skilled artists are befuddled by the impact of hull photography on perception.  It is hard to believe you are looking at a boat hull, says Beder.

Goals of the presentation.

1.     Share with the audience the beauty of boat hull photography.

2.     Discuss the complex environmental, natural and man-made factors that can influence or predict boat hull imagery.

3.     Discuss the observation that many hull stains can eerily look like (replicate the imagery) of the natural environment where the boat was moored.

4.     Discuss the importance of perception and look at the benefits of opening up one’s mind to a new way of looking at objects.

The presentation was exciting and so well received. Due to the positive feedback we were invited back to show more HullScapes at a future lunchtime Peanut Butter Club event at WHOI!!! And, and if you happen to be close to Cape Cod, Woods Hole is a great place to visit. It is full of science beauty and great restaurants. You can see even more HullScapes in Woods Hole at Coffee Obsession, one minute from the ferry terminal. It’s a great place to visit - and the food and coffee at Coffee Obsession are great!

Since the discovery of boat hull art, Barry’s photography has been featured in the Falmouth Enterprise and has been exhibited in art exhibitions at the Falmouth Arts Center, Cotuit Center for the Arts, Cultural Center of Cape Cod, Coffee Obsession in Falmouth. MA, Cape Cod 5 Bank, Mashpee MA and the clubhouse at SeaCoast Shores in E Falmouth. His photos have been privately purchased for private homes from Wash DC to Los[ Angeles, as well as Cape Cod. In May, Barry’s photographs were displayed for a month at the Falmouth Arts Center.

Do boat hulls really take on the characteristics of their environment? This summer I have been allowed to photograph boat hulls of some of the science ships that dock in Woods Hole after traveling around the world. I have already taken hundreds of photos from these science ships. Many of the ships have traveled the world and return with amazing hull designs and colors which I will post as soon as I can.
